Amsterdam is a great place to visit on your own. Traveling on your own is easy and safe in Amsterdam. There are lots of options for meeting new people, but you can also enjoy your own company. However, being alone on Valentine’s Day can be a bit tricky. That’s why we have made a list of tips for being single on Valentine’s Day in Amsterdam.

Valentine's Day

Go for stinky food

If you’re on a date, you probably shouldn’t eat those spareribs, garlic saus or strong smelling fish. But if you’re having dinner by yourself, it’s no problem at all! So enjoy all the stinky food and don’t worry about smelling of it later.

Avoid typical ‘date places’

Maybe you shouldn’t go for a candlelit dinner on the 14th if you’re feeling a bit sorry for yourself. Go to a cat cafe instead. At a cat cafe you can cuddle with cats while having your coffee. The cats are rescued cats from a local animal shelder. Cat cafe ‘Kopjes‘ was the first cat cafe in Amsterdam and is very popular. Make sure you make reservations before visiting the cafe.

Go on a dating app

Nowadays, there are numerous dating apps to go and meet other single people. We can promise you, you’re not the only one having a hard time spending Valentine’s Day alone. Maybe you can meet someone to get together and have drinks on the 14th of February. Being single together is far better than doing it by yourself.

Learn something new

You always feel better about yourself when learning something new. For example, go to a new sports class or join a creative workshop.

Treat yourself

If you do something with a date, your partner, or even your friend, you always have to adapt. If you’re doing something by yourself, you don’t have to! So treat yourself to a new book, a glass of wine and the best dessert in the world and enjoy your own company.

It’s a day like every other day

After all, Valentine’s Day is a day like every other one. So enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer. Go to a museum, rent a bike to explore the city, go for a city walk or go shopping. Our staff would also love to give you tips for things to do in and around the city, so feel free to ask. Enjoy your stay in Amsterdam!
