How to make the most of a couple of spare hours in Amsterdam

Spare hours in Amsterdam: Travelling to Amsterdam for business? When you have just a couple of spare hours between meetings, it can seem tempting just to spend them in your hotel room. What a waste that would be! Follow the top tips below for sights to see in just a couple of hours and make the most of your free time in the city.

Walk along the canal to the flower market

spare hours in AmsterdamYou will regret it if you go to Amsterdam and do not see any of the world famous canals! The great thing about a canalside stroll is that there are no queues involved. Stroll down to the flower market and pick up some tulip bulbs as souvenirs and perhaps grab a coffee and some cake at one of the many picturesque waterside cafes. This constitutes the perfect self contained little trip, and it will enable you to return to the boardroom or conference centre refreshed and ready to go.

Head straight to the Rijksmuseum

If you only visit one museum in Amsterdam then the Rijksmuseum is highly recommended. This museum contains a wealth of cultural treasures, including Dutch Old Masters, medieval art, and contemporary pieces. The Rijksmuseum shop is also a fantastic location to grab a few souvenirs of your stay. Nothing calms the mind after you have given a presentation like gazing at a few wonderful works of art.

Rent a bike

It is famously said that Amsterdam contains more bikes than people, and you can well believe it when you see the mounds of bikes lining the streets, waiting to be hired. Rent a bike and glide through the city, getting to know its various districts. Refuel with a classic Dutch sandwich of Gouda, gherkin and mustard on rye bread before sailing back in time for your next business event. A little exercise can be the perfect antidote to being cooped up in meetings all morning.

Leave Amsterdam with no regrets

Business trips can take you to wonderful cities – and then leave you feeling as if you do not have enough time to enjoy them properly. The three ideas above will ensure that you leave Amsterdam with none of these regrets – just plenty of happy memories to take home with you alongside all of that business paperwork.
